Precision Navigation

The Fishing Vessel Obsession pulls into the St. George Harbor after a brisk and intense fishing season for Snow Crab. Although many captains are very skilled, heard on the street is; "If you can negotiate the St. George Harbor, you can do antthing." Entering the St. George Harbor has often been the ultimate challenge for many a new captain, and often a proud notch on the belt of experience.

Done Fishing

The Fishing Vessel Obsession prepares to dock within the St. George Harbor at the close of another Snow Crab fishing season. Crewman scramble to ready mooring lines aboard the vessel, as dock personnel assist in making them fast to the bollards on the dock. Snow Crab, also known as "Opillio Crab", was at one time considered junk crab in the 70's during the King Crab fishery, today it's a very valuable product of the Bering Sea. So the next time you order a plate of "Snow Crab" at some resturaunt in America, or abroad, it may have been harvested here.

Braving The Elements

Heather braves the chilly elements working for Tetra-Tech on an environmental project here at St. George. Brisk chilly winds blasted our Island, as she and her coworker spent many hours braving the elements in the bitter cold taking water samples from a well that was drilled months ago. I just had to publish her entheuastic 1000 Watt smile despite the inclimnate elements, the snow was melting! . :-D

City Clerk

Phillip Lekanof, the City Clerk of the City of St. George, donated his personal time to build an outdoor Basket Ball Court for the children of our community, along with many other entheuastic children. The City of St. George graciously donated the property, and so did the Tanaq Corporation to develop the site, along with the construction company, UIC that did the fine finish work on the concrete for the court.

Gazing at Jupiter

I am not absolutly sure, but this appears to be Jupiter visible a few hours after the sun had set here at St. George. A pile of rocks placed here many years ago appears to gaze at the planet. I have no idea why this arrangement of piled rockes were placed here; perhaps navigation in the fog years ago. I still wonder today of the purpose, as they are placed in the midst of the island. Experimenting with night photography here, interesting results.

December Waves

Just before sunset the wind blown waves attracted my attention. In the distance, High Bluffs reaches for the clouds, as breaking waves rise to greet the winds.

December Morning Moon

Winter is quick upon us, and so are the long hours of night. It makes for moments like this when the moon and stars dominate the skies till spring. The clouds breeze on by in the morning winds, as the Bering sea waves create a blury white surf around the abandoned loading dock.

Spiritual Morning

In the twilight of morning the St. George Orthodox Church greets the new day as a seagull prepares to land atop the highest cross. I never actually saw the bird during the exposure, so I would have to say this was an Angelic Blessing for everyone.

Church Lights

The St. George Orthodox Church Beams it'a light over the Community of St. George in the midst of a driving, wind blown rain storm.

An Autumn Dusk

This evening I decided to see what I could capture on the camera, and what little there was left of the dusk light. Wow, look at this, November 20, 2003, and the snow is not on the ground yet, it all melted this week. A vehicle zips on by as I snapped this photo.

Murre Egg Hunting

Yes, we were Murre Egg hunting, Murres fly off the cliffs as we prospect for eggs. It's cliffs like these that we rappel down to harvest the Murre Eggs.

Murre Egg

Yes we were successful in harvesting many eggs, though risky, many of our Elders enjoyed this harvest. St George is featured in the August issue of the National Geographic Magazine 2003.

Seal Pups In The Harbor

North American Fur Seal Pups by the hundreds frolick within the relative safety of the Zapadni Bay Harbor,

Summer Dew

The simple blades of grass decorated with natures beads of dew reflect the beauty of the morning's sunrise.

A Summer Sunset

Early September brings clear skies this year, warm weather, and a sign....Fall/Winter will quickly set in. As the sun sets over our front yard, we enjoy the evening's beautiful blue skies, and this dazziling sunset.

F/V Ocean Harvester

The Fishing Vessel Ocean Harvester takes on a load of crab pots, in preperation for another year of commercial crab fishing for Snow Crab in the Bering Sea.
